Splinter Galaxy (ngc5907)

Also known as the Knife Edge or Splinter galaxy, NGC 5907 is an edge-on spiral galaxy. We see it like a knife edge, as we see it from the side, as opposed to seeing it from the front.

This galaxy has the unusual characteristic of containing very few giant stars. Astronomers theorize that NGC 5907 was formed about 8 billion years ago from the merger of dwarf galaxies, because of really faint tidal loops around the galaxy that I wasn’t able to capture.

This images was taken for about 12 hours (19 Luminances of 20 minutes and 11 RGB images of 10 min each).
